Types of VCI Applications

Our VCI products come in all varieties to suit any industry. Major types of VCI technology include paper packaging, plastic films, and liquids. 

"VCI" Stands for "Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor"

When shipping or storing metal parts, corrosion and rust due to moisture, salts, and other environmental contaminants are an immediate and potentially costly threat.


For automotive, heavy equipment, electronics, military, railroad, foundry, stamping and other metal markets where corrosion prevention is critical, the only defense is to use Volatile Corrosion Inhibitors in the form of either liquid coatings, or paper or plastic packaging impregnated with the VCI compounds.

How VCI Technology Works

Corrosion inhibitor compounds vaporize from the paper or film. They are attracted to the charged surface of the metal by virtue of their polar orientation.

The VCI molecules align on the surface of the metal to a depth of 3 to 5 molecules. This layer of molecules passivates the charged surface and creates a barrier that prevents oxidation.


The corrosion cell (the flow of electrons in the metal and the flow of ions in the electrolytic surface layer) is unable to establish itself.


Corrosion is halted.

Airtight packing is not required! Simply store or ship metal parts in paper or plastic VCI packaging. When the parts are unwrapped, the protective layer immediately begins to dissipate. The metal parts are clean, corrosion-free and ready to use. No washing, dipping or cleaning is necessary.

VCI Papers

K-Mots Packaging offers a comprehensive selection of VCI papers for industry. Papers treated with our safe, proprietary chemistry will prevent corrosion on the protected metals for years, without need for expensive coatings or ineffective methods such as desiccants or untreated barrier paper. Simply store or ship the metal parts in VCI paper. Parts will stay clean, dry and rust-free.

Our VCI papers come in a variety of grades. Larger or irregular shaped products should be protected with heavier grades of paper, while smaller parts can use lighter basis weights. Several of our products feature special substrates that combine a rust preventative with barrier packaging. Barrier coated papers and films protect against moisture and grease; laminated grades afford heavy duty protection against the environment and serve as a rust preventative.

Different metals require different types of protection. For ferrous metals needing long-term corrosion protection, choose Nox-Rust® Vapor Wrapper®, Ferro-Pak®, or Protek Wrap®, depending on environmental conditions and duration of storage. Uniwrap® MPI papers provide a multi-purpose corrosion inhibitor for short and long-term protection of combination ferrous/non-ferrous metals. For specialty metals, use Coppertex® or Alumitex®. Use reinforced papers such as scrim or steel wrap where extra strength is required. Silver components in electronics, automotive, and other industries benefit from anti-tarnish protection of Silver Saver® and Silver-Guard® papers.

All of our VCI papers can be converted into sheets, bags, and wraps for individual parts; shrouds, covers and liners for large pieces or stacks of parts. They can be custom printed with your logo for easy brand identification. Your name, wrapping instructions, or message appears in crisp, clear detail.

Non-Ferrous VCI Papers


K-Mots provides three types of anti-tarnish and corrosion prevention packaging papers to protect specialty metals commonly used in electronics, aerospace, automotive and other precision parts manufacturing. They are designed to prevent tarnish on silver, and stop corrosion on copper and a variety of other metals.

Multi-Metal VCI Papers

We have a wide selection of VCI papers to stop rust and corrosion on multi-metal equipment and parts. Choose the type and level of protection you need for your application, whether it calls for:

Multi-metal papers for general storage and shipping of parts, assemblies and equipment. All have a proprietary Daubert Cromwell vapor corrosion inhibitor formulation that stops rust and corrosion on ferrous/non-ferrous combinations, including cadmium and zinc galvanized steel:

  • Uniwrap MPI, in basis weights from 30 to 60 lbs., plus other substrates.

  • Uniwrap 33MPI, with wax coating for hand-wrapping small parts. Wax coating makes the paper moldable and moisture-resistant.

  • Uniwrap MPI chips, easy to use in hard-to-reach voids and spaces.

  • Uniwrap 200, a nitrite-free VCI paper.

Reinforced VCI Papers

Heavy loads, large metal pieces and export shipments need corrosion protective packaging that stands up to harsh conditions and rough handling. Reinforced VCI papers and films from Daubert Cromwell keep corrosion and moisture away from steel coils, wire, machinery, and whatever needs the power of VCI packaging.

Reinforced VCI papers and films:

  • Resist grease, oil and water / Excellent barrier against contaminants in the environment.

  • Resist rips, tears and punctures / Strong and durable for wrapping heavy pallets, irregular shapes and bulky equipment.

  • Provide VCI protection that is clean, safe and dry / Metal is ready to use immediately upon removing from VCI packaging. No rework is necessary prior to use.

  • Contain proven corrosion inhibitor formulations by Daubert Cromwell / Effective corrosion protection for metals since 1948.


Reinforced VCI packaging:

For coil wrap:

  • UW94MPI Woven - Heavyweight natural kraft poly laminated to woven poly fabric and coated with Uniwrap® MPI for multi-metal protection. Provides maximum strength and tear resistance.

  • Steelwrap MPI - Heavyweight kraft laminated with reinforcement and poly to another heavyweight VCI kraft paper. Provides heavy-duty moisture resistance and strength for wrapping steel coils.


For interleaving:

  • PC50MPI Scrim - Heavyweight natural kraft with LDPE reinforced with tri-directional scrim. Designed as sheeting and interleaving between heavy rolls and pallets.

  • PC50H Scrim - Equally strong, white appearance, with nitrite-free VCI protection.


For wraps, covers, and sheeting:

  • Woven Ferro-Galv® - Heavyweight kraft laminated to woven polyethylene/polypropylene containing powerful, effective, safe Daubert Cromwell VCI. Provides maximum strength and tear resistance.

  • Nox-Rust® Poly Wrap - A VCI all-poly fabric, excellent for wrapping and protecting steel coils. The unique 100% woven polyolefin structure and special polyolefin coatings give superior tear strength and abrasion resistance. Lightweight fabric is flexible and folds easily, but is strong enough to withstand the stresses when packaging steel coils. Tight weave construction and special impermeable poly coating on each side provide excellent protection against moisture and moisture vapor transmission.

  • X-O-Wrap, Shrink Wrap for Outdoor Protection - Available up to 10 mils thick and 32 feet wide, X-O Wrap has VCI and UV protection for large and bulky equipment stored outdoors. It fits tightly around rough edges without puncturing or scratching the metal surfaces inside. Keeps loads secure during transport. Perfect for protecting metals shipped by truck, rail, ship or air.

VCI Films

VCI film products provide proven corrosion protection. Through volatilization and contact, the VCI chemicals protect metal parts against the corrosive effects of moisture, salt and other contaminants while they are in process, storage or transit.

The corrosion inhibitors are extruded right into the polyethylene film, not superficially applied. As a result, the volatile and contact inhibitors provide long-term corrosion protection for the most intricate and hard-to-reach surfaces. The corrosion protection is clean, non-discernible, with no strong chemical odor.

VCI film is transparent for easy inspection and identification of parts. It will not affect the performance of the protected metal, and the parts are ready to use immediately after removal from the packaging without additional cleaning.

Premium Metal Guard

Premium Metal-Guard is a heat sealable, low density polyethylene film with a proprietary blend of multi-metal corrosion inhibitors blended throughout the film. Strong, transparent Premium Metal-Guard packaging film provides long-term corrosion protection for brass, copper, bronze, iron and steel. Parts stay clean, dry, and corrosion-free during all stages of packaging, shipping and storage. Available also as:

  • Shrink film – UV stable, transparent shrink film, in wide widths for covering large parts and equipment.

  • High strength Premium Metal-Guard. VCI film offerings premium protection for a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

  • X-O Wrap shrink film. UV stable, exceptionally durable VCI film for protecting large equipment and machinery stored outdoors. Up to 10 mils thick, 32 ft. wide.

  • Flat, re-sealable, and gussetted bags; tubing; custom fabrications.


The chemical nature of iron and steel makes these metals more susceptible to corrosion than any other metals. Typical multi-purpose corrosion inhibitors don't have the ability to protect metal grades at the extreme ends of the ferrous and non-ferrous spectrum. They simply do not have the power and anti-corrosion chemistry it takes to protect iron and steel under severe conditions. Daubert Cromwell Ferro-Film is a VCI film specifically formulated to protect iron and steel during all stages of packaging, shipping and storage.

  • Ferro-Film XP

  • Military-qualified VCI Film

New Ferro-Film® XP passes the U.S. government’s highest standards for corrosion inhibitor polyethylene packaging. It is on the “Qualified Product List” for Mil-PRF-22019 as a corrosion-inhibitor treated, flexible barrier material. Used by military suppliers and contractors required to use government-specified packaging.


Testing proves Ferro-Film XP is an excellent barrier against oil, water and moisture, and has superior strength against punctures.  Film is clear, transparent, with military-required print that is clean and won’t rub off. In addition, the non-stick formulation of Ferro-Film XP makes it ideal for converting into heat-sealed bags, in the types and sizes as needed for military packaging applications.

VCI Stretch Film

Premium Metal-Guard VCI stretch film offers the handling ease of polyethylene with the corrosion protection of Daubert Cromwell VCI chemistry. Acting like a VCI stretch wrap, Premium Metal-Guard is strong, stretchable, and stays in place. Excellent clarity and cling. Ideal rust prevention for odd-shaped or large metal parts during storage and shipment. Standard in 1 mil rolls of 18" and 20" widths, 1,500 ft. and 4,500 ft. lengths.

VCI Masking Film

Protect Metal Surfaces From Scratches, Corrosion. Premium Metal-Guard VCI Masking Film is a pressure-sensitive adhesive film that protects metal surfaces against scratches, marring, and corrosion. It is designed for temporary protection of exposed metal surfaces during all phases of manufacture, storage and handling. It applies easily and peels off without leaving a residue on the protected surface. The strong, transparent film protects the metal against defects and prevents corrosion for months.

To use, apply the film directly to a clean, dry metal surface. The water-based acrylic adhesive is clear, odorless, lightweight and safe. 

Premium Metal-Guard masking film will withstand roll forming, bending, cutting and stamping, making it ideal for use in metal fabrications, metal service centers, doors and trim works, and heavy duty industrial equipment and machines that are stored indoors.

Nox-Rust® Poly Wrap

Nox-RustŽ Poly Wrap - A VCI all-poly fabric, excellent for wrapping and protecting steel coils. The unique 100% woven polyolefin structure and special polyolefin coatings give superior tear strength and abrasion resistance. Lightweight fabric is flexible and folds easily, but is strong enough to withstand the stresses when packaging steel coils. Tight weave construction and special impermeable poly coating on each side provide excellent protection against moisture and moisture vapor transmission.


Nox-Rust Poly Wrap VCI all-poly fabric is excellent for wrapping and protecting steel coils, steel sheeting and pallet shrouds, equipment covers, and applications requiring physical and corrosion protection.


The unique 100% woven polyolefin structure and special polyolefin coatings give the product superior tear strength and abrasion resistance to provide excellent protection and long-term durability. The inner surface of the fabric is impregnated with proprietary VCI (volatile corrosion inhibitor) chemistry, which keeps the metal free of rust and oxidation.

Silver Guard Anti-Tarnish Bags


Consumer and industrial customers alike are clearly seeing the benefits of protecting their silver pieces and components inside new Silver-Guard anti-tarnish packaging. Industries worldwide are using reusable, reclosable Silver-Guard zipper bags for storing precious silver.


Bags are non-toxic, recyclable, and parts are clearly visible inside the bag even when closed. It is a more economical, effective solution than using anti-tarnish strips and tabs. It significantly reduces packaging time, expense and inventory by achieving superior results in one step, with one product.


Silver-Guard works by removing all sulfide vapors from within a closed environment. The chemicals in Silver-Guard react with the vapors to eliminate the sulfide, and therefore eliminate the risk of tarnish. Unlike other products, Silver-Guard may be placed in direct contact with silver and other noble metals without any risk of staining or discoloration.


Silver-Guard is popular not only for consumer items such as flatware, coins, silver serving pieces, jewelry, musical instruments, strings and accessories, it is preferred by electronics manufacturers for tarnish prevention because it does not interfere with solderability, conductivity, or coatings.

Metal Guard FF Barrier

Moisture barrier bags, also known as foil bags, are one of the most effective packaging solutions on the market today to protect against corrosive damage caused by humidity, moisture, oxygen, salt spray, aromas, grease and other airborne contaminants. Products bagged and sealed in properly controlled production environments will remain protected indefinitely, as long as the correct moisture barrier materials remain intact.

To meet these customer requirements, Daubert Cromwell introduced Metal-Guard FF, the heavy-duty, heat sealable, flexible foil barrier material that sets a new standard in barrier packaging. It starts with a Mil-PRF-131J QPL lamination composed of biaxially oriented nylon, aluminum foil and a heavy polyethylene sealant layer. Daubert Cromwell's proprietary VCI formulation was added to the PE sealant, creating an air and moisture proof combination proven to protect packaged metals against corrosion.

Metal-Guard FF essentially replaces the 2-step process of wrapping parts with VCI poly and then a laminated barrier foil. Use it to prevent corrosion on items during long-term storage or shipment and where conventional methods would be difficult or costly. Typical applications include wrapping or crating large machinery for export or wrapping smaller parts for long term storage.
